Rene Braun is doing panoramic laundry

The secret to Rene’s panoramas: I shoot my Canon 5D but I visualize a pano and then crop with 1×3 or 3×1 ratio in photoshop. Voilà!

Rene and I met in person at Koudelka’s book signing at the Aperture Gallery in New York City. Magnum’s Josef Koudelka had a retrospective titled Koudelka, just released. Along with his best known work, the book features beautiful panoramic shots most of which I had never seen before; some of them are huge and printed on three page spreads. Long before Linhof 617 Technorama or Fuji 617 (6×17) Panoramic cameras were available, Koudelka was drawn to the panoramas and would crop his Rolleiflex 6×6’s to that format. If you are interested in shooting panoramic images on film and can’t afford the pricey Linhof, crop your 6×6 negs (and it doesn’t have to be a Rollei, Yashicamat will do) down to ‘6×17’ size. I remember that back at the CCNY darkroom, one of the students cut out an opaque mask and stuck it on the focusing screen, someone else glued a mask inside his 35 mm Nikon body — the prints were very grainy but we all loved them.

Gosh… I saw Koudelka’s show Kaos some years ago in Milano.. those prints were several meters large… utterly impressive… and even after there was a show from him Theater of Time in Rome… with panoramas taken in the ancient roman ruins…

…that Koudelka guy knows his job.
