Quote of the Month : Garry Winogrand

September 7, 2007

Garry Winogrand: “Photography is not about the thing photographed. It is about how that thing looks photographed”.

“A photograph is the illusion of a literal description of how the camera saw a piece of time and space.”

If you are interested in memoirs of Winogrand’s students, read Mason Resnick’s article on taking a seminar with Garry. And here’s the description of Winogrand’s teaching technique (and more) by one of his students, O.C. Garza. It is 20 pages long (and in PDF) & with Garza’s photographs of Garry — you’ll like them!
